I'm dealing with what I believe are serious safety concerns involving a new LeafyPack Ecobagger Vape EcoVape machine, and I’m looking for someone with the technical or legal capacity to help me figure out what to do next.
The machine packs vapes into mylar bags and prints on them and seals the unit. The problem is the unit has no proper safety mechanisms to detect when a bag closes premature and tries to force units through anyway often destroying them or sending them flying in who knows what direction. We found it to be about 1-2% of units, which economically already makes the device much worse than hiring a bunch of hand packers.
The biggest concern is the heat-clamp system. We’ve already had multiple close calls involving lithium-ion batteries getting trapped in the heated clamp and opted to stop using the device for safety concerns, and the economic factor of the 2% destruction rate of $45 units.
Separate from the safety issue, our overall experience with LeafyPack and Plan-It Packaging has been extremely frustrating. We purchased approximately $150,000 worth of equipment from LeafyPack / Plan-it. The installation was never fully completed as they could never get the printer working and ultimately left us hanging as repairing it would be too expensive and the payment was already made. We were ultimately told to stop contacting them...
The half that was working, the packaging half, has experienced repeated sensor failures and other problems with the EcoVape. The technicians and automation people we’ve brought in have not been able to resolve them because some of the problems appear to require manufacturer-level access, knowledge, parts, or support. At the moment, we essentially have a very expensive machine that we cannot confidently or safely put into production.
I’ve been reaching out to attorneys, but finding counsel willing to deal with a cannabis-related equipment dispute has been surprisingly difficult. To be clear, this isn’t really a cannabis-law issue, the dispute involves commercial equipment, installation, warranty/support, and potentially product/machine safety, but the industry connection seems to turn some firms away immediately. So I’m reaching out here.

If other EcoVape operators are using this machine, I’d be very interested to know what safeguards your machine has around the heat-clamp area and whether you’ve experienced anything similar.
